We all know that we are supposed to brush and floss our teeth every day (2 times a day for brushing). But what else can you do to take care of your smile? Here are some things to know as you seek to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong.

Eat Well–Eating well is a vital part of your overall health, and it directly affects your mouth health. Be sure to get lots of calcium and lean protein in your diet, as well as a rainbow of vegetables and fruit to ensure you are getting sufficient vitamins and minerals.

After You Eat– After you eat–especially after eating or drinking acidic foods–your teeth and gums are more sensitive to abrasion. As toothpaste have mild abrasives, and the act of brushing is inherently abrasive, brushing your teeth immediately after eating can actually be harmful to your teeth and gums. Try chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes instead. This stimulates saliva flow, which in turn fights cavities. Make sure to get a product that actually helps your teeth.

The American Dental Association– The American Dental Association has a program called the ADA Seal of Acceptance. It is a seal placed on products that have proven, through rigorous testing, that they are beneficial for mouth health and do what they say they will do. It can be found on toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwashes, even chewing gum. This is a great way to make sure you are buying a quality product.
